abulani – The Spirit of Happiness – Celebrate Always!
This past autumn marked our first harvest and our first processing as Jabulani Vineyard and Winery Ltd. As many of you may already know, 2010 was an amazing year as the sugars in the grapes were high enough to enable a harvest that was earlier than usual. That said, we were still busy with production up to mid December!
We’ve used different areas of the farm for different aspects of the wine making including placing the skins, seeds and spent yeast, after pressing, in a crib at the bottom of Chimney field to compost. The deer have been having a couple of outrageous parties in that area of the farm as have the turkeys. The turkeys leave evidence of intoxication behind as zig- zag tracks running through the snow. The deer just have amusing smiles on their faces. So besides enlisting the views of our family, friends, a wine consultant as well as a sommelier, the wildlife has also passed judgment on our wine. By all accounts, there seems to be total agreement that the wine is very good!
Our grapes have been blended to create some spectacular wines, some which will be ready for sale in June of this year, while others will age to enhance their complexity.
By the time of our opening we will have an un-oaked Chardonnay sur Lie, a Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, a Frontenac Gris/Pinot Grigio blend, a Frontenac Gris/Vidal blend, and an early Shiraz/Marquette blend, and a Marquette/Cabernet blend. We have added a full set of labels with wine notes below for your information. We will be continuing to age the brothers of these red wines, along with a Merlot, so that they will ready for your Christmas pleasure along with another barrel aged Chardonnay, which already tastes of butterscotch!

After tasting our Marquette wine (noted to have black cherry and spicy flavours), and being incredibly impressed, the plan for this year in the vineyard is to add another 2500 vines of that grape to the second vineyard. We are also researching the latest red to come out of Minnesota, that of Petite Pearl. Our original idea was to only have 11 acres under vines, but if this little grape turns out to be as tasty as our Marquette, we may have to rethink our strategy.
So please mark you calendars for June 11th and come join us in our tastings.....and
